Questions and Answers:

My mom is moving from a huge house into assisted living. What do we do with all her stuff? I'm clueless about where to begin. Who do I hire?
There are support services available in the community for your mother as she makes a move to an assisted living facility. There are relocation services specifically for seniors downsizing to a senior living facility. These programs can assist seniors with downsizing by preparing a house for real estate market, packing, organization of move, placement of furniture in new home, unpacking, organization of new home, and disposing of items left in old home.

Another option is hiring a geriatric care manager who is helpful in developing a care plan for frail seniors. It sounds like you and your mother have already made the decision to move to assisted living. If, however, you have not found a suitable place for her to move or need home care services in the meantime, a care manager could be a good resource.

Care managers usually charge on an hourly basis and come to the home, conduct an in-home assessment of the elderly person, develop a care plan outlining the options available to support the person, and can arrange for appropriate services or placement. Consulting with a geriatric care manager would be a good idea if there are still questions or decisions to be made. Use SeniorNavigator.org to find a list of relocation services or care mangers available to help seniors, their families and caregivers.
