The Economic Downturn: Living Well During Stressful Times

There are many challenges brought on by a weak economy. If you haven't experienced these challenges personally you've seen them on TV and read about them in the daily newspaper. Hours at work are cut, employees laid off. The 401(k)'s value has been cut in half. Everything seems to cost more from gas to utilities. More and more people are feeling stressed and losing sleep.

Regardless of how the economic downturn has touched you and your loved ones, there is a silver lining in all of this. People are using this time to appreciate what they have and prioritize to figure out what is really important to them. Many of us are learning to waste and spend less and save wherever we can.

It is important to stay positive and manage any stress you are experiencing. Prolonged stress can take its toll on us physically, mentally and emotionally. Living healthfully is especially important during tough times. It is more important than ever to eat well, exercise and get enough rest and sleep. Eating well can be challenging with grocery prices going up. There are ways to cut costs and eat fresh, nutritious meals.

We are all feeling the effects of the economy in different ways and each of us has a unique way to cope. The widespread effect of this economic downturn means that at least we are all experiencing it as a community. We hope you find ways to support yourself and your loved ones and band together with your community to cope.

A special thank you to our Partners — whose commitment to community and technology allows us to reach all Virginians, with and without internet access, and offer new tools on SeniorNavigator.
