Who We Are

Safe Harbor depends on volunteers to help manage programs.  Each volunteer must complete an intensive 4-week training series.  The trainings are offered three times a year in spring, fall, and winter.  Volunteers are divided into  teams as follows;

  • Shelter/Hotline Team: staffing the shelter/hotline
  • Hospital Accompaniment: on-call and responds to local hospitals to accompany survivors of violence during medical and/or forensic exams
  • Children's Advocacy/Office Manager Team: providing childcare and greeting individuals in the community office in the evenings (also includes light administrative work on occasion)
  • Community Outreach/Education Team: assisting with staffing  "Safe Harbor"  tables at events and/or community trainings on intimate partner violence and Safe Harbor services
  • Development/Special Events Team: tracking donations, assisting with special events
  • Volunteer Engagement Team: assisting with guiding the volunteer program, interviewing potential volunteers, being an extra pair of hands for the volunteer training

If you are not able to commit to the full training but still want to support the work of Safe Harbor, another option is to participate in our quarterly Safe Harbor Day through Hands on Greater Richmond. Volunteers are needed to perform upkeep around the house at the shelter and in our community office. Projects will be determined upon arrival but will include tasks such as painting, closet organization, and outdoor maintenance projects. You can register through the Hands On Greater Richmond website.

If you are interested in attending the training and being an ongoing volunteer with Safe Harbor, please fill out a Volunteer Application and someone will follow up with you as soon as possible.
